M50 Ontos Schematic T-Shirt

The M50 Ontos was designed for a US Army proposal which specified a light, air-transportable tank destroyer using a common gasoline engine already in US supply chains. Allis-Chalmers - known for manufacturing tractors and heavy equipment - designed the Ontos. The US Army rejected the vehicle and cancelled their order for 1,000. The Marine Corps, however, signed a contract for 297 vehicles which entered service in 1956. The Ontos became well-regarded in the Vietnam war not for the tank-busting task it was designed for but for its ability to support infantry with heavy firepower over light bridges and through terrain too soft for heavy armor.
